目前PLC在國內外已廣泛應用于鋼鐵、石油、化工、電力、建材、機械制造、汽車、輕紡、交通運輸、環(huán)保及文化娛樂等各個行業(yè)。在運城電廠主要有化學制水、生活污水處理、工業(yè)廢水處理、凝結水精處理等。有關PLC的使用情況主要分為如下幾類。
1 開關
開關是最常見的電子元件，功能就是電路的接通和斷開。接通則電流可以通過，反之電流無法通過。在各種電子設備、家用電器中都可以見到開關。 PLC可以方便地實現邏輯控制取代傳統(tǒng)的繼電器。
繼電器是我們生活中常用的一種控制設備，通俗的意義上來說就是開關，在條件滿足的情況下關閉或者開啟。繼電器的開關特性在很多的控制系統(tǒng)尤其是離散的控制系統(tǒng)中得到廣泛的應用。從另一個角度來說，由于為某一個用途設計使用的電子電路，最終或多或少都需要和某一些機械設備相交互，所以繼電器也起到電子設備和機械設備的接口作用。
電路，實現邏輯控制、順序控制，既可用于單臺設備的控制，也可用于多機群控。如水泵的啟停、閥門的開關、制水系統(tǒng)順控、干除灰系統(tǒng)等。
2 工業(yè)過程控制
在工業(yè)生產過程當中，存在一些如溫度、壓力、流量、液位和速度等連續(xù)變化的量量(即模擬量)，PLC采用相應的A／D和D／A轉換模塊及各種各樣的控制算法程序來處理模擬量，完成閉環(huán)控制。PID

PLCC通信含PLC間的通信及PLC與其他智能設備間的通信。隨著工廠自動化網絡的發(fā)展，現在的PLC都具有通信接口，通信非常方便。
